The Green Bay Packers have finally filled their vacancy for their general manager position with the promotion of Brian Gutekunst, according to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network.

Gutekunst will reportedly sign a five-year contract with the Packers to take over the spot previously held by Ted Thompson for the last 12 years. He was set to interview for the Houston Texans' general manager opening on Sunday.

Prior to taking the position, Gutekunst was the team's director of player personnel since 2016 after initially joining the staff back in 1998. He was originally hired as a scout and served that role for 13 years, working as the Packers' director of college scouting from 2012 to 2015.

Green Bay made the decision to hire him over former general manager Ron Wolf's son, Eliot, as well as Russ Bal, who is the team's vice president of football operations/player finance. Former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley was also in the running for the open position.

The Packers also got in touch with a pair of their former scouts who are currently general managers with other teams in John Schneider, who is with the Seattle Seahawks, and Reggie McKenzie, who is working for the Oakland Raiders. McKenzie reportedly declined the chance to interview to the position, a decision that may have been impacted by the hiring of new head coach Jon Gruden to a 10-year, $100 million deal.

All of this gave off notion that the Packers were looking to hire someone that had a previous connection with the organization in some fashion. Keep in mind, head coach Mike McCarthy stated that they needed to hire someone who “had to fit” alongside him given that he would be working closely with that person on a daily basis.

Gutekunst will be tasked with retooling the Packers' roster over the offseason after missing the playoffs first time since the 2008 campaign.
