Raise your hand if you've heard this one before: Aaron Rodgers is feuding with the Green Bay Packers.
To be fair, it's not quite a feud, but more of a holdout. According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, there was a possibility that the Packers were attempting to slightly alter his $6.8 million roster bonus in order to free up some cap space going into the rest of this offseason.
This, rightfully has brought up a good bit of speculation about Rodgers' situation with the Packers, which was thrown into a bit of turmoil when the team spent last year's first-round draft pick on Rodger's apparent successor, Jordan Love from Utah State.
Article Continues BelowSays Demovsky: “Multiple league sources said they believe Rodgers wants assurances that he will be Green Bay's quarterback beyond just the 2021 season and that he won't be a “lame-duck” quarterback.”
Rodgers is coming off of what many have seen as a resurgent year for the veteran quarterback, earning his third MVP award and posting a laundry list of absurd statistics: 70% completion, 48/5 TD/INT ratio, nearly 4,300 yards, and a 121.5 QBR over the regular season. However, speculation about the quarterback's future has come after two key losses during the regular and postseason, both coming at the hands of Tom Brady and the Super Bowl-winning Buccaneers.
Asked of Rodgers' future with the team after one of these losses, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst was quoted:
“I don't think I have to do a lot of assuring him because I think obviously his play speaks for itself.”
If Rodgers' response to the proposed restructuring of his contract is anything to go by, then the Packers might have to put their money where their mouth is. More to come as this offseason continues.
