New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is currently the early favorite to be the next Green Bay Packers head coach. However, former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi doesn’t believe McDaniels is a good fit in Green Bay.
Bruschi said Wednesday on WEEI's “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria” (per Alex Reimer of WEEI.com) that while McDaniels might be just what quarterback Aaron Rodgers needs in a coach, he believes Rodgers would simply override McDaniels’ play-calling and just do what he wants.
“Josh McDaniels may be the best thing for Aaron Rodgers in terms of giving him a system that he can trust, but I don’t think Aaron Rodgers wants that,” Bruschi said. “Aaron Rodgers wants the power in terms of ‘I want to be able to do what I want to do and turn this play, whatever you call, into whatever play I turn it into and that’s my best skill.’ But that skill is running out for him.”
“You gotta bring in a coach and the first question you ask is, ‘Alright you and Aaron, do you think you’d get along? And a lot of coaches are going to say, ‘Yeah, yeah we’ll get along. I love Aaron Rodgers’ and all this and all that. But once you start calling plays, things change.”
It was no secret that Rodgers was not pleased with Mike McCarthy’s play-calling this season. It had also recently been reported recently that Rodgers would routinely change McCarthy’s play calls and run his own plays.
Perhaps Rodgers had just simply grown too frustrated with McCarthy and would return to running the plays of a new head coach whom he respected. And maybe McDaniels would be such a coach. But while Bruschi doesn’t believe that’ll be the case, the Packers could still target McDaniels anyway considering he’s one of the most appealing head coaching candidates around.
