The Jacksonville Jaguars want to give Gardner Minshew a chance to win the starting job, but the competition is going to be fierce. The Jaguars traded Nick Foles to the Chicago Bears, which makes Minshew the number one guy on the roster.

The Jaguars own the number nine pick in the draft. Some have questioned if the franchise will use that selection on a quarterback.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said the team is evaluating everyone, but the team is excited they have Minshew on their team.

“Gardner Minshew’s our guy and I’m excited about that,” Marrone said via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Marrone also admitted he wanted competition at all positions during the Thursday conference call.

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said the team won't pass on a quarterback if they find good value, which means a first-round pick might be out of the question.

This goes along the lines of what Peter King of NBC Sports Football Morning in America said with the team wanting to give Minshew a real chance to prove if he can be the long term option or not.

Not a quarterback, I hear. “They really want to give Gardner Minshew a real shot,” one FOC (Friend of Caldwell) says. Defensive impact player like Swiss-Army-knifish Isaiah Simmons makes sense. Biggest question for Jags on draft weekend revolves around the latest really good cornerstone player who wants out, Yannick Ngakoue. Can Caldwell find a fair deal for the defensive end?

Who knows if this is all just a smokescreen or not, but if they don't take a quarterback in the first couple rounds, they must have great faith in Gardner Minshew.
