Every NFL offseason includes some puzzling decisions from front offices around the league. It's no surprise that this free agency period has been no different. While some teams around the league have pulled off incredible trades and huge signings to turn themselves into contenders, there have been several signings that will almost surely look awful within a couple of years.

Here are three of the worst signings during NFL free agency so far.

3) Randy Gregory

Randy Gregory spurned the Dallas Cowboys and signed a five-year, $70 million contract last week. It's easy to see this signing and justify it by saying that the Denver Broncos need to load up to hang around in the AFC West. The Broncos certainly need improvements to be a contender, but Gregory wasn't the best way to improve. The former Dallas Cowboy had a good year in 2021, notching six sacks and four forced fumbles in only 12 games. Those are good numbers, but they aren't good enough to justify the contract the Broncos just handed to him. Statistically, Gregory was similar to guys like Yannick Ngakoue and Dorance Armstrong Jr. Armstrong Jr. was Gregory's backup on the Cowboys, and he produced one less sack and more tackles than Gregory while only playing one more game. It's obvious that Gregory is a better player than Armstrong Jr., but he's certainly not the top-level pass rusher Denver is paying him to be.

Gregory has shown signs of greatness throughout his career, but consistency has been an issue. The Nebraska product has dealt with suspensions in the past, but more concerning is his injury history. He's never played a full season in his entire career, dealing with a variety of injuries. Gregory will also turn 30 in the middle of the 2022 season, so Denver has him under contract until he's 35. Injury history never gets better with age, making this contract even more suspect. Overall, the Broncos drastically overpaid for a talented, inconsistent pass rusher who has injury problems. That's typically not a great idea.

2) Rasul Douglas

This was one of the more puzzling deals of the offseason. The Green Bay Packers re-signed Rasul Douglas to a three year, $21 million dollar deal after Douglas put together a good season for them in 2021. In theory, that doesn't sound so bad. However, cornerback is one of the most volatile positions in the NFL. Douglas had never played with a shred of consistency before 2021. There's a reason Green Bay was able to find him as a free agent in the middle of last season. Douglas was never even trusted as a starter before he came to the Packers. He played in a reserve role with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Carolina Panthers. It's hard to justify this signing after one good year out of five in the NFL for Douglas.

The size of the contract isn't awful, but it's definitely not good. Green Bay is paying Douglas more than guys like Mike Hilton of the Cincinnati Bengals and Casey Hayward of the Atlanta Falcons. Hayward was a free agent this offseason, so the Packers certainly could have pursued him. He's been a consistently good corner throughout the course of his career, and now he's getting paid less than Douglas. This contract will look bad within a couple of seasons when Douglas is sitting on the bench again.

1) Christian Kirk

This was an easy one. The Jacksonville Jaguars handed Kirk a four-year, $72 million dollar contract that can be worth $84 million when it's all said and done. That makes Kirk the 10th-highest-paid receiver in the NFL. That's absolutely ridiculous for a player who has never been a top-30 wide receiver in the NFL. Kirk has never even been the best receiver on his team, and now he's getting paid like Tyreek Hill and Mike Evans.

In order to make this a justifiable contract, Kirk needs to play like a top-ten receiver in the NFL. There's no reason to think that will happen, as Kirk has never even surpassed 1,000 yards receiving in his career. Jacksonville just massively overpaid for a player who functions best as a good third receiver. This contract already looks awful, but it will look even worse by the end of next season.

This signing was so blatantly ridiculous, fans have had a lot of fun with it.
