The Dolphins finished 7-9 this season and went 23-25 overall in 48 games under Gase.
Gase had a promising first season with the Dolphins. He led them to a 10-6 record in 2016 as they reached the postseason for the first time since 2008. However, they have gone a mediocre 13-19 in the two years since.
Although, Gase was without starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill for all of the 2017 season due to a knee injury and had to make do with Jay Cutler, who had recently retired.
Prior to being hired as the Dolphins' head coach, Gase was an offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos as well as the Chicago Bears.
Article Continues BelowWhile Gase has lost his job, he's not expected to be unattached for long given his reputation of getting the best out of his quarterbacks. He's already been linked as a possible head-coaching candidate for the Cleveland Browns.
As for the Dolphins, their search for Gase's successor begins. They have recently been linked to Jim Harbaugh, although Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has dismissed those reports.
The Dolphins have had it very tough since the turn of the century. They have made the playoffs just twice since 2001, and have gone through nine head coaches during that time.
Gase was unable to get the Dolphins back to the top, and it remains to be seen whether his successor — whoever that will be — will be able to do so.
