New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is not exactly a popular man in the Big Apple right now after trading star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns in a blockbuster deal last week.
One of the biggest stories surrounding the Giants right now—if not the biggest—is quarterback Eli Manning, who is clearly on the decline and is not even remotely close to the player he once was.
However, Gettleman is holding on to the hope that Manning can still be a fine starting quarterback for New York:
“This narrative that Eli's overpaid and can't play is a crock,” said Gettleman, according to Giants beat writer Art Stapleton.
Manning did not have a bad season in 2018 in spite of all of the “he's done” talk, as he threw for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 92.4.
Still, Manning's inconsistency this past year was definitely a red flag, and given the fact that he is now 38 years old, time is not exactly on his side.
Of course, Gettleman's quote could also be a way of throwing other teams off the trail in terms of the Giants' draft situation, as they seem to have their eyes set on Ohio State signal-caller Dwayne Haskins, and this could be New York's strategy of trying to prevent rival teams from trading up.
Either way, Manning has one year left on his deal, so his time with Big Blue is likely coming to a close in the near future.
