The benching of two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning sent shockwaves throughout the NFL last week. Many stars around the league and former New York Giants teammates and coaches came to Manning's defense as he dealt with a decision which put the veteran quarterback in a difficult position.
Along with Michael Strahan, Tom Coughlin, and even Tom Brady supporting Manning, the fans came out in droves to buy his No. 10 Giants jersey. Sales of Manning's jersey spike after he was benched by the team, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.
While Eli Manning sat on the bench last Sunday for the first time in 10 years last week, sales of his jersey rose.
By the time Sunday ended, Manning's New York Giants No. 10 jersey was the 14th-best-selling jersey in the league, up from 30th the day before, according to sales data from Fanatics, the largest retailer of NFL jerseys and manager of the NFL's online shop.
Although the benching of Manning caused quite a stir in New York as well as around the NFL, the Giants have decided to make a change at head coach following Week 13. As expected, Ben McAdoo has been shown the door and now Manning has become the starting quarterback once again.
The team has announced Manning will be back under center in Week 14 as the Giants try to finish the season strong and then evaluate what they'll do moving forward in terms of the head coaching position as well as their long-term plans at quarterback.
