The New York Giants are treading toward another disappointing campaign after dropping their seventh loss in the first eight games of the season that has put them on the fast track toward missing the playoffs.
Despite that once again being the case, head coach Pat Shurmur has voiced that quarterback Eli Manning will continue to be the starter moving forward, according to Ralph Vacchiano of Sportsnet New York.
Pat Shurmur on Eli Manning: “Eli’s our QB. We’ve got to do what we can to help him be better. There’s a handful of plays where he needs to be better. That’s obvious.” https://t.co/aRGHZy4TQL

These comments not only erase any questions about a possible quarterback change it also dispels any of the trade rumors that have been floating around. There had been some lingering talk that the Giants would entertain the scenario of trading Manning in order to clear things out for a fresh start for the organization. However, it appears that the team is going to stick it out with the 37-year-old being the starter for the rest of the year.
Manning is in the fourth year of his four-year, $84 million deal that could allow for the franchise to get out from his final season as he has just a $6.2 million dead cap hit for the 2019 campaign if they part ways with him. Shurmur appears to be more than willing to ride out the rest of the 2018 campaign with him as there could be assured that he's kept on board as the head coach beyond this year despite the team's struggles.
It was hoped that Manning could have a career resurgence under Shurmur, but that hasn't been the case as he has struggled to lead the Giants back to being a playoff contender. Instead, New York has been one of the least productive teams in the league offensively ranking 28th with just 18.8 points per game. This is still a fluid situation, but it is clear that the Giants want to continue to roll with Manning under center.
