The New York Giants managed to secure an upset victory over the Chicago Bears in overtime. Unfortunately, it came with a bit of a price after safety Landon Collins suffered a shoulder injury.
Collins has already been ruled out for New York's Week 14 matchup versus the Washington Redskins. According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, he could potentially even need season-ending shoulder surgery:
Giants S Landon Collins has a shoulder injury and will not play Sunday in Washington, according to a source. He underwent more testing yesterday, but is still in pain. Season-ending surgery is a possibility, but not definite.
The prospect of Collins missing the rest of the season is certainly a devastating blow. He has established himself as a bit of an ironman since his arrival in New York back in 2015. The former second-round pick started and played in all but one game during that span. However, it became evident during the game that the shoulder injury was deemed serious after he was forced to miss some snaps.
Given the state of the Giants' season, it would not make much sense for Collins to risk further injury. New York is currently sitting in last place in the NFC East at 4-8. Despite their lackluster division, making the playoffs at this point would be a bit of a stretch.
Collins has established himself as an integral part of the Giants' defense thanks to his versatile skill set. He is slated to become a free agent after this season. It may be in both his and the team's best interests if he begins the healing process as soon as possible.
