Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas made headlines recently for his notable departure from last week's game after suffering a fractured leg. For good reason, New York Giants safety Landon Collins is among the players paying close attention to his situation.
Collins is in the last year of his rookie deal and will undoubtedly be looking for a lucrative extension after this season. According to Tom Rock of Newsday, he is not worried about any risk of potential injury before he gets paid.:
“It's always in the back of your head that you don't want to get hurt, definitely in a contract season you want to be secure,” Collins said on Wednesday. “But I play football. I love this game. I'm going to play hard.”
It is encouraging to see that Collins is not letting what happened to Thomas determine his approach. However, there is still plenty to be learned from his scenario.
Thomas made it clear last season that he was looking for some long-term security from Seattle. Unfortunately, when it became evident that they were not willing to meet his asking price, he held out hoping that he would be traded to a team that was willing to do so. He ultimately decided to come back when the trade talks stalled and was even looking like his usual dynamic self until suffering the injury. Now it is unclear what the future holds for the six-time Pro Bowler.
Although Collins is not going to play with the fear of getting injured, he would still be wise to learn what he can from Thomas' situation. He has gotten off to a stellar start to his career as a two-time Pro Bowler, but he has been unable to mirror the type of production he enjoyed prior to the forearm injury. He needs to find a way to pick his numbers up and stay healthy if he wants to secure the bag this offseason.
