Following their “Thursday Night Football” loss to the New England Patriots, the New York Giants are shaking up their running back room. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the G-Men are signing free agent Javorius “Buck” Allen. Subsequently, Jon Hilliman has been waived. The Giants worked out C.J. Anderson and Akeem Hunt before signing Allen, per Field Yates of ESPN.

On Thursday, the Giants struggled to run the ball without their top two backs in Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion). New York rushed for 53 yards in the 35-14 loss. Hilliman received 11 carries for 38 yards, while also tallying two catches for minus-3 yards, including a fumble returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Hilliman is an undrafted rookie out of Rutgers. For the season, he amassed 30 carries for 91 yards in three games played, good for three yards per attempt.

Allen, formerly of the Ravens, spent his first four seasons with Baltimore after they made him a fourth-round selection in 2015. For his career, he has  340 rushes for 1,249 yards (3.7 yards per attempt) and eight touchdowns, while also recording 129 catches for 814 yards and six touchdowns. His best year came in 2017, when he rushed for 591 yards and four scores on 153 carries (3.9 yards per attempt).

The Giants won't likely have to rely on Allen in Week 7, against the Arizona Cardinals. Though Barkley did not play in Week 6, he was practicing during the short week. He should return in time for the Cardinals game, in New York. Gallman — who filled in nicely for one game — may be available then as well.
