Running back Saquon Barkley has been impressive for the New York Giants this year, but head coach Pat Shurmur admits the team could benefit from him getting more touches.

The Giants are 1-3, so they need to change something to produce some wins. Barkley was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Taking a running back so high was a huge risk, especially considering the draft's depth at quarterback.

However, Barkley wowed scouts at the combine and has produces at a high level in the NFL so far. Shurmur thinks getting the ball in his hands could help jumpstart their offense.

“Looking back on it, I think Barkley had [16] touches yesterday,” Shurmur said. “I’d like to have a couple more probably, and those being runs certainly. We want to run the ball, we want to run the ball and when we want to throw it, we want to throw it, and we want to be explosive and efficient doing it. That’s the reality of it.”

Saquon Barkley's 260 rushing yards rank him 11th in the NFL this year. He has 17 fewer attempts than the league-leading Ezekiel Elliot.

Barkley has proven that he can also be an asset as a receiver out of the backfield. His 453 yards from scrimmage rank him 8th in the NFL. Pat Shurmur needs to make use of his young stud.

The Giants lost 33-18 to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Barkley only had 10 carries for 44 yards and a score. If they want to get games, they'll need to maximize Barkley's touches so he can use his speed in the open field. It'll also open up opportunities for star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. down the field.
