The New York Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention with their loss to the New England Patriots in Week 13. As a result, head coach Pat Shurmur has now had to answer for their abysmal performance in the 2019 NFL season.
Shurmur has received his fair share of criticism amidst New York's eight-game losing streak. He acknowledged that the only way to dispel these notions is by winning games, via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY:
Article Continues Below“I’m well aware of it,” Shurmur said regarding the criticism of his performance after the 31-13 loss to the Packers. “People will change what they think of us and me when we win games.”
While there certainly is some truth to Shurmur's comments, it may be too late in the 2019 campaign to lend any credence to a sudden resurgence. He had now led the Giants to a 7-21 record since taking over as the head coach and it is safe to say that his sat is now hotter than ever.
This is a crucial period in the organization. Despite struggling to find his footing as a rookie, quarterback Daniel Jones has seemingly established himself as the franchise quarterback in New York. His development from here on out will be a top priority for the front office and it remains to be seen if they feel Shurmur is the right person for the job.
New York has some rather favorable matchups remaining on the schedule. the onus will fall on Shurmur to ensure they end the season. on a high note if he hopes to make his case to stay.
