In the last several days, the New York Giants have been taking the precautionary approach with their handlings of rookie running back Saquon Barkley since he suffered a minor hamstring injury.

However, it appears that Barkley has taken some progressive steps forward on Wednesday with his participation in practice in individual workouts, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Barkley is starting to get back up to speed. According to multiple reports from Giants practice on Wednesday, Barkley is doing individual work in his first time on the field since August 13.

The Giants have continued to take the steady approach of handling the situation with much care given the type of injury that he's dealing with at the moment. It's one that could linger on if not handled properly as it's a common ailment that can often times lead to more issues down the line with other areas of the body.

New York has much high aspirations for Barkley in his first campaign to immediately step in as a major contributor out of the backfield. The hope is that he can bring much stability to the running game that has been lacking with the Giants for quite some time. In his limited preseason action, he has shown promise to be a potential game-changing for the offense with his explosive big-play ability that could bring another element to their offense.

With the start of the regular season still a couple of weeks away, there is no rush from the Giants to get him on the field sooner than he's ready to do so. These next several days will be indicative what his status for the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars behind what he can handle physically. Nonetheless, the fact that he's now able to participate in some limited individual workouts is an encouraging sign.
