The New York Giants are set to take the field in the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday afternoon, which will mark the debut of rookie running back Saquon Barkley.
In the last couple of weeks, he has been working his way back from a hamstring injury that he recently voiced that he is ready to handle a significant workload in his first NFL action. According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, head coach Pat Shurmur voiced that all the running backs on the roster are going to get their fair share carries out of the backfield.
“You’ve heard me say this in the past, it takes a village with the running backs,” Giants coach Pat Shurmur said. “The running backs that are up are all going to get their touches, and regardless of Saquon, Wayne, Jonathan, whoever is up is going to get their touches.”
This should further clarify that the Giants are ready to feed Barkley a steady amount of work in the contest to where he can show his playmaking ability. The team is hoping that the 21-year-old can quickly show what made him the second overall pick in this year's draft along with while is the frontrunner to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Barkley is a uniquely talented player that has proven that he can be a highly productive offensive factor when given the opportunity to play a significant role.
These comments should also signal that the Giants have no concern over his hamstring injury that flared up a couple of weeks ago in practice. Barkley looks to be completely passed these previous issues with him being physically ready to go take on a huge role in the offense against the Jaguars.
It sets the table for Barkley to begin his rookie campaign with a strong outing that helps him solidify his position in the Giants' offensive game plan for the season.
