The New York Giants may have fallen short in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but there is plenty of buzz and excitement around the franchise due to the play of rookie running back Saquon Barkley.
This has put on the table the possibility that he could put together one of the most productive campaigns in franchise history. During a recent interview with TMZ Sports, former Giants great running back Tiki Barber voiced that he would welcome Barkley surpassing his single-season team record for rushing yards at 1,860.
“I hope so. That means good things for the New York Giants. If he breaks my record then means good things. Records are made to be broken.”
The 21-year-old certainly has a long way to go before he can reach that mark, but he is off to a strong start in that direction. In the season opener against the Jaguars, he posted 106 rushing yards on carries with a touchdown in his debut. Although much of that came on a 68-yard touchdown run, he had shown plenty of explosive bursts and big-play ability in the running game. He had put that on display with his performance on his long touchdown dash as he was able to avoid defenders with his shiftiness while break to the outside to speed past defenders.
Barkley has the talent to quickly become a star in the NFL, which he will have the chance to prove that the further along he goes in his rookie campaign. He will have plenty of touches in the running game while playing a factor as a receiver out of the backfield as he saw six targets in the passing game hauling in two four 22 receiving yards.
The task of reaching Barber's record will be a daunting challenge, but there may be plenty of opportunities ahead to get close to that mark in the 2018 season.
