It has been a few years since there was a ton of excitement surrounding the New York Giants heading into a season. For years, the fans became used to seeing the team underperform and disappoint. Now, it is a start of a new era with Daniel Jones entering his first full season as a starter and Saquon Barkley looking for a major comeback season after struggling with some injuries in 2019.
This week, the Giants are going to get their first look at their new team against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. What better way to start the season and a new era of football than in primetime on Monday night?
Jones and Barkley are looking to make the New York Giants a feared offense once again. Eli Manning was never as good as his brother, but he was always capable of putting up big performances. Gone are the days of Odell Beckham Jr. and drama and here are the days of the Giants playing an underdog role.
While most are taking the Steelers to win this game, the Giants firmly believe that they are going to surprise some people this year. They are no longer a team that should be looked at as a pushover. New York is going to compete and compete hard with a ton of players with a chip on their shoulder looking to prove themselves.
All of that being said, let's take a look at three bold predictions for the New York Giants in their season opener against the Steelers.
3. Saquon Barkley Kicks In “God Mode”
If there is one thing that the Giants should be expecting this season, it is that Saquon Barkley will put up a huge year. He was very disappointed with how he played last season. Even though injuries played a big part in his struggles, he has a chip on his shoulder and will be out to prove himself in 2020.
Against a Steelers defense with a lot of talent, Barkley is still going to put up massive numbers. Daniel Jones will in no way have to do anything by himself this season.
Barkley will end up rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the first game of the season. He will also be heavily involved in the passing game with seven receptions for 60 yards and possibly another score. Pittsburgh will have no answer for him this week.
2. New York Giants Sees A Much-Improved Daniel Jones
When the Giants drafted Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, they received a ton of criticism. Many thought they should have taken Dwayne Haskins, while others said that they drafted Jones over Haskins simply because he was white. Following his rookie season, Jones has shut most of those sentiments up.
As a rookie, Jones completed 61.9 percent of his pass attempts for 3,027 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 13 games. Unfortunately, he also struggled with fumbles and had 12 of them throughout his rookie year.
Coming into year two, the Giants are expecting to see a lot of development from Jones. He will show some of that development by not turning the ball over a single time and throwing for 250 yards and two touchdowns. New York will feel even happier that they took Jones over Haskins last offseason.
1. The Giants Shock The Steelers With A Win
None of these predictions would mean much of anything if the Giants ended up losing the game. All the team cares about is coming through with a big Week 1 win. That is exactly what they will be able to do on Monday night.
New York's defense will need to step up this season, but the offense will power them to a win this week. Barkley and Jones are going to do enough to take the Giants to a 1-0 record.
We are going to predict that the Giants will win this game by a final score of 31-24.
