Jones, 27, spent three seasons with the Giants after spending two years in the Canadian Football League. Although, he missed his entire first season in 2015 due to injury. After playing at left guard in 14 games in 2016, he started 13 of the 16 games he played last season last season, playing primarily as their starting center.
Jones will provide some much-needed help to a Vikings offensive line which is still waiting on starting center Pat Elflein to recover from offseason surgery. Elflein remains on the physically unable to perform list and could potentially miss the first six weeks of the regular season.
As for the Giants, they will now likely turn to Jon Halapio to start at center following Jones’ departure. Halapio appeared in 10 games with six starts at right guard for the Giants last season. They also have versatile veteran lineman John Greco capable of filling in at center if necessary.
Jones’ exit means that they will now have a new starter in all five offensive line spots this season. Nate Solder has come over at left tackle to displace Ereck Flowers, who’s moved over to the right side. Fellow free-agent signing Patrick Omameh will slot in at left guard. Meanwhile, rookie Will Hernandez will start at right guard.
