The Philadelphia Eagles open up their preseason campaign on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they are going to be very shorthanded. Carson Wentz is still coming back from the ACL injury that cut last season short, and it was never in the plans for him to play in the first game of the preseason.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Nick Foles is missing his third straight day of practice with upper body soreness on Tuesday so it would be shocking if Foles suited up for the game.
QB Nick Foles (upper body soreness) isn’t practicing again, all but assuring he won’t play in the #Eagles’ preseason opener on Thursday.

Nate Sudfeld has been taking the first-team reps with the other two guys out and expect him to get a lot of run on Thursday night. It's going to be a good opportunity to show the Eagles why they should keep three quarterbacks instead of just Foles and Wentz. The Eagles also have fourth-stringer Joe Callahan who should get some good run on Thursday.
Even though Wentz isn't playing on Thursday night, the plan is still to have him ready for week one barring any major setbacks. There is also a chance that Wentz won't play any snaps in preseason and he could still be the starting quarterback in week one. Wentz hasn't done any 11 on 11 drills during training camp yet, but he has done some seven on seven.
The Eagles are going to need to see him do some of those drills before they get him back on the field in a game situation. If he isn't ready for Week 1, the Eagles will still be in good shape with Foles ready to step up in and be the starter.
