The ESPN Monday Night Football booth will be changing again this season due to Jason Witten un-retiring from football – which means he retired from announcing. With that in mind, ESPN has a big name in mind – Peyton Manning.
The problem with that, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, is that Manning keeps saying no to their offers. They should be expecting him to say no for a while too.
That makes sense, as Manning hasn't made up his mind on if he wants to be in the booth at all yet. Even if he does, he's Peyton Manning. He can wait it out and probably get a ridiculously massive offer from someone the more he makes networks sweat.
Witten was often criticized for being boring in the booth. It's hard to imagine Manning would get the same type of criticism. The former quarterback was commonly known for his surprising sense of humor back when he was still playing. He starred in a number of hilarious ads and even hosted SNL.
Now that he's retired, nothing's changed except for the fact that he has more time without football.
Manning would bring a lot of knowledge to the booth and probably an incredibly fun vibe. However, it's hard to imagine he'd be able to cover an Eli Manning game. You wouldn't blame him for not wanting to rip into his brother should he do something wrong.
Every recently-retired player would have to deal with discussing former teammates that are still playing. So you'll always get a level of bias when it comes to that. It would probably be more obvious (but understandable) for a sibling in that situation.
Whatever Manning decides to do, he'll probably find a way to keep everyone entertained.
