Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy said the team plans to bring back quarterback Aaron Rodgers and retire his jersey at a later date.

“We will bring him back and retire his number at the appropriate time,” Murphy said at a shareholder's meeting.

Rodgers, who is arguably Green Bay's best quarterback ever, was traded to the New York Jets in April. He played with the Packers for 18 years, including 15 seasons he started.

He had one Super Bowl win, four Most Valuable Player selections and 59,055 passing yards, the second-most in franchise history after Brett Favre.

Rodgers won back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021. Last season, the Packers failed to make the playoffs with an 8-9 record. Rodgers threw for 3,695 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Even though his career with the team ended on a rough note, Rodgers had an incredible run with the Packers. The team had at least 12 wins in five of his seasons and advanced to the NFC Championship Game five times.

Green Bay will be led at quarterback by fourth-year player Jordan Love. Love has started one game in his career and was formerly the No. 26 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Love was an All-Mountain West second-team selection at Utah State and threw for 8,600 passing yards, 60 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his three-year career. Utah State was 11-2 in his sophomore season and won the New Mexico Bowl.

Love was named MVP of the game after he threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns against just one interception.

The Packers will open their regular season Sept. 10 versus the Chicago Bears. They are not scheduled to play Rodgers and the Jets in 2023.
