Sunday's dominant 37-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings allowed the Green Bay Packers to officially clinch the top spot in the NFC. The Packers still have one more game remaining in the regular season, but at this point, head coach Matt LaFleur doesn't sound like he's going to be resting on his laurels.
When asked about his plans for Green Bay's upcoming Week 18 bout against the Detroit Lions, LaFleur revealed that he does not intend to sit any of his players:
“Right now the mindset is we're going to play our guys, and we're going to approach it like any other game,” LaFleur said, via Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Currently at 13-3, the Packers will conclude the regular season as the top seed in the NFC regardless of the outcome of next Sunday's match against the Lions. Nevertheless, it is clear that LaFleur still intends to go full strength against Detroit, perhaps with the mindset of building more momentum as they head into the postseason. The Packers are in the midst of a five-game winning streak and it would be a shame if this run comes to an abrupt end right before the playoffs start.
Reigning league MVP Aaron Rodgers has been dealing with a toe injury over the past several weeks, but it does not sound like he's going to get the night off on Sunday. Then again, LaFleur could opt to start Rodgers and then take him out of the game earlier than usual. After all, there's no point in risking Rodgers' health (and that of any other star player, for that matter) in what is essentially a non-bearing contest.
