It's been a busy offseason for the Green Bay Packers and free agency has yet to begin. Most of the moves this team needs to make are within the organization. For that reason, it sounds like Green Bay has made a key move regarding star linebacker Preston Smith.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Packers have officially extended Preston Smith on a four-year deal “worth $52.5 million.” It's a massive contract with a ton of incentives, which could earn the star linebacker up to $71 million over the next five years. With this one decision, Green Bay has locked up one of its key assets on defense.

For now, the Packers run the NFC North as they have the best roster within the division by far. Aaron Rodgers returns, although, there is some concern regarding Davante Adams and his contract negotiations with Green Bay. Even so, the front office made sure to keep Preston Smith for the long haul, keeping the defense competitive.

We should see the Packers play as one of the best teams in the league next year. All eyes are on Green Bay as they attempt to win a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers. The franchise has fallen short in recent years, but everyone involved in the organization is hopeful to win a championship sooner, rather than later.

The 2022 NFL free agency opens on Wednesday, March 16 and it should be a thrilling time for fans around the league. However, we could see the Packers be relatively quiet, as extending Davante Adams should be top priority right now. At the end of the day, re-signing Preston Smith is a smart move, as Green Bay maintains a stacked roster on both sides of the ball.

Look for the Packers to focus on revamping the special teams unit while figuring out an extension for Davante Adams.
