The 2020 NFL season will all be for naught if no franchise can take down reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. According to former New England Patriots executive Mike Lombardi, the Foxborough franchise has a shot with Cam Newton to defeat ex-MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Per OMF on WEEI about the Patriots:
“I think they can — I do,” he said. “A lot of it is going to come down to their kicker and how good he is, right? Because he’s a rookie. It’s also going to come down to how good those young players are on defense. If they (the Patriots) can add another defensive lineman or somebody in there to give them a little more (strength), I think they can.”
After a tumultuous special-teams situation last season, the Patriots did not re-sign kicker Nick Folk, also releasing Stephen Gostkowski in March. Instead, New England opted to select Marshall kicker Justin Rohrwasser in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Lombardi references the skepticism surrounding how good the kicking game can be for the Patriots in 2020 given the rookie status of Rohrwasser.
This week saw the Patriots find a new quarterback, too, in former league MVP Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers, released earlier this year by his once only franchise in his professional tenure.
