Mito Pereira was the favorite heading into the final day of the PGA Championship. He held a multiple stroke lead following three impressive days from the 27-year old. In fact, he was the favorite up until the 18th hole… a hole he surely wishes he could have back.

Pereira held a 1-stroke lead over Will Zalatoris and the eventual winner, Justin Thomas, heading into the 18th hole. All Pereira needed was par to win. Instead, he ended up with a double-bogey after a wild tee shot that ended up in the water. It was an extremely disappointing ending after such a tremendous effort all weekend long.

Justin Thomas went on to defeat Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win the PGA Championship.

Mito Pereira commented on his 18th hole blow up after the match.

“Obviously, sad to be here and not in the playoff, not make par, just straight win. On 18, I wasn't even thinking about the water. I just wanted to put it in play, and I guess I aimed too far right. I just hit in the water. I mean, I wish I could do it again.”

Realistically, all Pereira needed to do was keep the ball out of the water and he at least would have had a chance of making the playoff. But as any golfer knows, that is much easier said than done. Even the pros struggle with consistency from time to time.

Despite the end result of the PGA Championship, Mito Pereira has a bright future ahead of him.
