Yikes! This wood boy would keep anyone up at night as Pinocchio's horror film gets an update.
Variety reports that the new film is titled Pinocchio: Unstrung. And it sounds…well, read for yourself.
It's in the same Poohniverse from which Winnie-the-Pooh, Blood and Honey is based. Here again, we'll see a beloved children's character in a low-budget slasher film that's bound to scare kids — and adults — of all ages.
Rhys Frake-Waterfield will direct the new film. Casting has yet to be announced.
Details of Pinocchio: Unhinged
The director of the film said, “This will be an extremely unique and R-rated depiction of Pinocchio. Featuring a high kill count, a subversion of the original story, and lots of practical gore. I'm going to welcome Pinocchio into the Poohniverse with a bang.”
Regarding details, Variety reported that one scene will see the wooden character wearing a victim's skin to “feel like a real boy.” That's something you wouldn't see in a Disney version.
The producers told Bloody Disgusting, “Unannounced characters from the universe will be revealed in sketch drawings in the closing of Pooh 2, so keep an eye out!”
One of the sketches features a wicked-looking Pinocchio on a tool bench, grinning.

Since Pinocchio is now in the public domain, the character can be used without restrictions.
This Poohniverse isn't ending with Winnie and Pinocchio. Games Radar reported that the director has plans for a Peter Pan horror movie and a Bambi slasher to compete with the MCU.
“The idea is that we're going to try and imagine they're all in the same world, so we can have crossovers,” Waterfield told THR. “People have been messaging saying they really want to see Bambi versus Pooh.”
He added, “There are many, many, many other ideas out there which aren't tied to Disney, loads of old fairytales and urban legends, concepts that are synonymous with your childhood, and they're the ones which I want to build up into a twisted alternative reality.”
In an interview with SFX Magazine, the director shared some details about what inspired him to create these types of films. “The main franchises I was thinking of while making these were Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Wrong Turn. I really like Wrong Turn. It's not as big as the other ones, but the first one is on my little list of horror movies that I love. And as we're going into the sequel soon, Terrifier 2 is going to be one of my key reference points. I want to make sure I go as big and epic as they went with that. I want to try and push it even more.”
We'll reveal more as Pinocchio: Unstrung approaches its potential bloody January release date.
