Due to multiple injuries on the defensive side of the ball, particularly the secondary, the Los Angeles Rams gave a call to recently retired safety Eric Weddle. After sitting out for two years, Weddle comes back to help LA compete for a Super Bowl. He reveals how the phone call went down.

According to Pro Football Talk, Eric Weddle claims the “Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris called him this week and asked him, ‘You're not fat and out of shape, are you?'”

Pretty direct and to the point. Have to respect Raheem Morris asking a question like that. Luckily, Weddle isn't fat or out of shape, as he “works out just as hard in retirement as he did when he was an active player,” per Pro Football Talk. With that response, the Rams signed Eric Weddle for their playoff run.

Some are concerned that Eric Weddle won't be ready to play against the Arizona Cardinals during the Rams' Wildcard matchup. However, Weddle has a history with Raheem Morris and, according to Pro Football Talk,  “is confident that he will know the defense well enough to be ready to play Monday night.”

We'll see how this all plays out for the Rams. It's not an ideal scenario to have a former retired veteran step in and play meaningful snaps. Even so, Eric Weddle was a phenomenal safety in his prime and was playing at an elite level until the day he retired. Although he hasn't played a snap of football since there's reason to believe LA's defense will remain at the top of their game.

Make sure to catch the Rams take on the Cardinals on Monday night, as the race to the Super Bowl officially kicks off on Wildcard Weekend.
