The Los Angeles Rams and star defensive tackle Aaron Donald still have been unable to come to terms on what is expected to be a highly lucrative contract extension. However, things may be looking up in Los Angeles as the start of the 2018 NFL season draws near.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Rams and Donald may be closing in on a deal sooner rather than later. The two sides are said to be on the cusp of putting pen to paper.
The Rams and defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the reigning NFL defensive player of the year, remain on the verge of a deal that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, per a source with knowledge of the situation. But the deal still isn’t done, presumably because one or both sides is hoping to squeeze out one or more last-minute concessions.
Donald is widely regarded to be one of the best defensive players in the NFL if not the best. The 27-year-old continues to play at a high level year in and year out as he's been named an All-Pro for three straight seasons and is coming off his first Defensive Player of the Year award.
Along with Donald trying to securing a record-setting deal, Khalil Mack of the Oakland Raiders is in the exact same position with a very similar resume. Although there have been rumors of the Raiders potentially trading Mack, the first of these two defensive superstars to sign an extension will set the market with the second player to sign likely surpassing that number.
With the start of the 2018 NFL regular season on Sept. 6, the clock ticking for the Rams and Raiders to get a deal done before things become even more complicated.
