In the last few months, the Los Angeles Rams have had star defensive tackle Aaron Donald's contract situation hanging over the head of the franchise that has now seeped over into the preseason and training camp.

However, there has been chatter recently that things have picked up between both sides working toward a new lucrative deal for the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Rams head coach Sean McVay voiced that this latest development would be news to him.

“I’ve seen a lot of reports out there, but that’s news to us,” McVay told reporters on Monday. “So, no news on that front for us. Same thing as just the dialogue, but as far as anything that’s changed, it hasn’t changed.”

There are several ways this chatter could be interpreted as it may be McVay trying to push attention away from the talks to keep them private. It may be that they are nearing a deal, but the process is still very much fluid as to the final terms of the contract and doesn't want to influence it negatively through the media.

The Rams have made it clear that they are highly interested in getting a new lucrative extension in place for their star defensive tackle. McVay had voiced last week that both sides were in the same “zip code” as far as the type of money that will be offered and that talks have increased.

Through his first four years in the league, he has developed into arguably the best defensive player in the NFL that has earned four straight Pro Bowl selections, three First-Team All-Pro nods, and the Defensive Player of the Year award. Donald has been the clear-cut anchor of the Rams defense that also now features a few other All-Pro talents that include defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
