Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed has not been cleared from the team's concussion protocol since suffering a head-trauma injury during the team's third preseason game in August 2019. Reed made a helmet-to-helmet collision with Atlanta Falcons safety Keanu Neal, missed the first few weeks of the 2019 regular season, and was placed on the team's injured reserve (IR) list last October.
Per Rhiannon Walker and Jourdan Rodrigue in The Athletic, Reed, 29, is still in concussion protocol.
“Jordan Reed is still going through the concussion protocol,” Rivera said. “He’s a very veteran guy. We have an opportunity to bring in a guy like Greg Olsen, so that’s one of the positions where we have identified, said, ‘Hey, we do need to have a veteran guy at that position one way or another.'”
“We’re evaluating all of our options,” Rivera said during the Carolina Panthers’ gear yard sale at the Humane Society of Charlotte on Saturday. “We have a good young group of guys, and we’re just looking at things and deciding whether or not we want to go that way, continue to get younger — or, do we have to sit there and sprinkle in some veteran guys?
Reed's health uncertainty following the news of his static concussion-protocol status—the seven-year veteran tight end hasn't played since Dec. 2018—follows closely behind swirling rumors that free agent tight end Greg Olsen could reconnect with former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, who's now in charge of the Redskins.
Reed recorded 54 catches for 558 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 13 games during the 2018 season for the Redskins.
