Many thought that The Boy and the Heron would be Hayao Miyazaki's last film. However, that doesn't appear to be the case. A Studio Ghibli executive has revealed why.

Speaking to Barry Hertz, Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka said that The Boy and the Heron may not be goodbye, after all.

“In his [Miyazaki's] mind, this [The Boy and the Heron] isn't his last film,” the Studio Ghibli executive said. “He doesn't say goodbye. As the Japanese title [How Do You Live?] says, this is a film that says, ‘I've lived this way, How Do You Live?”

He continued by revealing why Miyazaki announces his latest films as his last. “Miyazaki often announces his retirement after making a film, because he's put all his energy into it, and thinks he can't make any more,” he revealed. “But this time he's not saying so. He's making exhibits for Ghibli Park now, and has some movie ideas.”

The Boy and the Heron is Miyazaki's first Studio Ghibli film since 2013's The Wind Rises. It follows a young boy who discovers a fantastical world with a talking grey heron. The film opened in Japan on July 14 and premiered at TIFF last night.

GKIDS acquired the domestic distribution rights to The Boy and the Heron. They will release the film in theaters on December 8 in regular and large format screenings including IMAX.

Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary filmmaker. The 82-year-old filmmaker has made some of the greatest animated films of all time. His resume includes My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Ponyo.

The Boy and the Heron will be released on December 8.
