After the Houston Texans parted with their former general manager, the team is now in search of a new one a few months ahead of the regular season. According to Peter Schrager of FOX Sports, the Texans will be interviewing Martin Mayhew for the vacant job.

Mayhew is currently the 49ers Vice President of Player Personnel, and has been a general manager before, when he helped run the Detroit Lions from 2008 until 2015. According to Schrager and other reports, Mayhew is a well-respected individual in NFL circles. Given his history of being around NFL front offices, it could be a solid fit for the Texans.

After leaving the Lions in 2015, Mayhew became the director of football operations for the New York Giants, before moving on to the 49ers in 2017 to become a senior personnel executive. Given how fast he moved up the chain of command in just two years, it stands to reason that Mayhew may be trying to move back into a leadership role, whether as a general manager or something else.

As for the Texans, the team was seemingly unhappy with how former general manager Brian Gaine had been doing in his sole year on the job. After hiring Gaine in 2018, the team fired him nearly less than a year into the job, noting that after a thorough evaluation of the team, it decided to relieve him of his duties.

Although the Texans went 11-5 last season, it seems the Texans have higher hopes, and will no doubt try to find the right man for the job this time around.
