Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will be playing this season under the franchise tag as long as he reports to the team, but the expectation is that it could be a while before that happens.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Texans don't expect Clowney to report anytime soon, but the expectation is that he will still be on the field when the team takes on New Orleans Saints to open the season.

The Texans weren't able to reach a long-term deal with Clowney so they decided to place a franchise tag on him as a linebacker. Clowney's team also has an issue with that and the NFLPA has filed a grievance over it. Clowney actually played more snaps last year at defensive end last year which means he would be paid a little over a million dollars more if he was tagged at that position. Last season, Clowney was paid a $1 million bonus after he filed a similar grievance for the fifth year of his contract.

Clowney hasn't signed his franchise tag yet, so Clowney isn't losing any money or being fined by not showing up to training camp, so it would make sense that he would use this as leverage.

It also makes sense that Clowney still plans on reporting because losing almost $1 million a week is a big sum to lose and it's hard to imagine he could recoup that in free agency if he sat out the entire season.

Even though he isn't with the Texans yet, expect to see him on the field in Week One.
