The Houston Texans have still been in negotiations with Houston Texans pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney about a possible contract extension. Texans GM Brian Gaine recently described those talks as “amicable.” However, it doesn’t seem like the two sides will be able to strike a deal this year.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Clowney is expected to play out the final year of his deal as the Texans are set to push their decision on whether to pay him into next year. Clowney is set to earn $12.3 million this year after the Texans picked up his fifth-year option.

Despite optimism from the Texans earlier in the offseason that they could get a deal done, there was a sense that Clowney may not get his extension as he missed part of the offseason program to rehab from knee surgery in January.

Clowney played a full 16-game season for the first time in his NFL career in 2017 and had a great year with 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 59 tackles. However, he does have a history of injury issues. Apart from this year’s surgery, he also underwent two knee procedures, including microfracture surgery, during his injury-plagued rookie year.

The Texans shouldn't be in a rush to lock up Clowney to a long-term deal. After this season, they still have the option of placing the franchise tag on him. But if Clowney can prove he can remain healthy and productive this season, he may just force Houston to hand him that big new contract.
