Nearly 40 years after the release of This is Spinal Tap, director Rob Reiner is set to return to his beloved mockumentary in a sequel that will reportedly feature two of the biggest names in rock to come out of England.
Reiner shared some early details about his planned This is Spinal Tap sequel and some special cameos already planned for the film during his appearance on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, according to NME. He teased some surprises in store for audiences, with rock legends Elton John and Paul McCartney already confirmed to be making appearances in the upcoming film.
“Everybody’s back. Paul McCartney is joining us, and Elton John,” Reiner told the podcast. “And a few other surprises, Garth Brooks.”

In addition, Reiner confirmed the original film's principle cast of Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer would all be returning to portray the fictional metal band at its heart. He did not say, though, if he would be back in front of the camera, as well, to reprise his role as Spinal Tap's manager.
The original 1984 film, This is Spinal Tap, followed the trials and tribulations of a fictional metal band dubbed “one of England's loudest bands.” These troubles include struggling ticket sales, tensions between the longtime bandmates, and multiple drummers for the band dying under strange circumstances including choking on someone else's vomit and spontaneous combustion.
While the film experienced a small degree of success during its original theatrical release, it quickly amassed a cult following for its satirical humor about the life of rock and roll lifestyle. It was also credited with helping to popularize the mockumentary genre and was selected for preservation inside the Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 2002.
Reiner said the sequel is set to begin shooting around the end of February 2024.
