The Chicago White Sox acquired reliever Craig Kimbrel from the Chicago Cubs during the Cubs' fire sale at the 2021 trade deadline. The White Sox envisioned Kimbrel being part of a dominant bullpen alongside closer Liam Hendriks  and fireballer Michael Kopech.

However, Kimbrel was a disaster on the South Side, and it looks like he'll have a new home next season. The White Sox plan to pick up Kimbrel's $16 million option for 2022 and then trade him, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.

While Kimbrel excelled as a closer for the Cubs in 2021 (23 saves and a ridiculous 0.49 ERA), the White Sox got him to be the setup man for Hendriks instead of the closer. That move backfired in a big way, with Kimbrel notching a 5.09 ERA in 23 innings pitched in the regular season. The veteran then struggled against the Houston Astros in the ALDS, recording a 9.00 ERA in three appearances as the White Sox lost in four games.

While Kimbrel really struggled in his setup role, his time with the Cubs showed he can still be an effective closer. The Pale Hose might not get a ton in return in a trade, but they should be able to get something given there will be teams out there looking for closers.
