Crazy baskets from A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young helped the defending champion Las Vegas Aces grab a victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday.
Both Wilson and Young put up 22 of the Aces' 89 points. For Wilson, nine of those were from the 3-point range. Young went 8-of-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Kelsey Plum and Alysha Clark contributed, too, with Clark putting up 13 with three 3s. Plum also hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 with five assists. Showing their use of the floor and strong defense Wilson grabbed 10 rebounds with three steals, Plum had three steals, and Young added 11 assists and six rebounds for the two-time defending champs.
Though it was a slow start for both teams, it was a neck-and-neck battle down the stretch. The Sparks' Dearica Hamby finished with 29 points to lead Los Angeles. Kia Nurse scored half of LA’s 18 in the first quarter to help the Sparks to a two-point lead. But it wasn’t enough.
By the end of the second quarter, Sparks were flying to the hoop to close the Aces’ lead.
The Sparks went on a 12-2 run over a 2:17 span early in quarter two for their largest lead of the game, 32-25. The Aces then strung together 15 straight points over 2:30, which included a 3-pointer from four different players.
Kate Martin scored the first points of her professional career with a 3-pointer in the second quarter. Martin showed her grit several times throughout the game, holding a block that instantly became a meme on Twitter. The support for the rookie from her teammates played out on the court, with Wilson providing support to “Money Martin” after a foul and Plum cheering her on after Martin’s major rejection of the Sparks’ Li Yueru’s attempt.

In the third, the Aces expanded their lead to 12 points, 50-38. But, the Sparks didn’t take the lead lightly. The road team aggressively worked to defend the rock, leading to a few fouls, which was to the chagrin of an exasperated Plum. A foul on Plum from Sparks’ Cameron Brink stirred the pot and fired up the Aces.
The Aces went up 13 in the fourth. A late push from the Sparks had LA within four before Wilson and Young sealed the deal by scoring the game’s final five points.
Earning a second win after Tuesday’s home game against Phoenix Mercury, the Aces are keeping it all in Vegas for now.
Las Vegas remains at home for the next two games. The Aces play against Mercury again on Tuesday at 7 pm PT/10 pm ET. The team closes out its four-game homestand on May 25 with a highly anticipated game against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.
