The New York Yankees are striving to get the franchise back to the Major League Baseball playoffs after a disappointing 2023 campaign. The Yankees looked to hire former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross as part of their bench coaching under Aaron Boone, but it seems there's a catch. Ross informed the team he wants a managerial position, per The Athletic. It's unclear if that was a deal breaker, but no deal has yet been reached.

The Yankees manager Aaron Boone and Ross worked together at ESPN, so it makes some sense to have the two working together again. However, it seems David Ross isn't willing to take a job under Boone or any other manager at this time. Ross was recently fired by the Cubs in what many considered a surprise move and Ross clearly feels he's good enough to keep managing a major league team.

Ross managed the Chicago Cubs from 2020-2023, having an up-and-down tenure with the organization. He won the NL Central in 2020, but had losing seasons in 2021 and 2022. 2023 was a winning campaign for the Cubs but ownership didn't feel he deserved another season.

2023 was also a winning campaign for the Yankees, but certainly not enough in the eyes of fans. The Yankees finished 2023 with a 82-80 record and missed the playoffs for the first time under Aaron Boone. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge battled injuries for most of the season, and the team's bats weren't able to get enough runs to compete better in the AL East. The team certainly needs to make some moves to get the franchise moving in the right direction again, but it seems Ross won't be a part of that solution.
