In the report that revealed Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy is the “top choice” to direct Avengers 5, a team update was sneaked in. While the first four MCU Avengers films were led by the core team, the next film could feature a massive ensemble.

Deadline reported that Levy is Marvel Studios‘ first choice to direct the fifth Avengers film. However, it's not confirmed that he will take it. In the meantime, they are attempting to get the ball rolling in hopes of a 2025 production.

Sources told Deadline that “more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles.” They specifically named Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, and Karen Gillan.

Granted, most of those names aren't surprising to hear. All but Hiddleston are alive in the MCU's current timeline. This does confirm, though, that Shang-Chi (Liu) will return and be a part of the Avengers. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Nebula (Gillan) starts a new life on Knowhere with Drax (Dave Bautista). How she is brought back into the fold remains to be seen.

With this rumor, it means that more characters will get their time in the spotlight. “Many of the characters in this film would have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team,” the report said.

Who is the villain of Avengers 5?

It appears the hero's side has been figured out for Avengers 5. However, Deadline's report indicates that it's unclear who the antagonist of the forthcoming ensemble film is. Jonathan Majors' Kang was originally a top candidate, but given his exit after his reckless assault conviction, that is off the table.

“Following Jonathan Majors' exit from the MCU as Kang following his reckless assault conviction in December, it is unknown who the central villain would be, or if the film could potentially include multiple antagonists,” the report said.

What movies has Shawn Levy directed?

Shawn Levy is known for his work in the Night at the Museum and Stranger Things franchises. He began his career by directing comedies such as Just Married, Cheaper by the Dozen, and The Pink Panther. In 2011, he directed Deadpool 3 star Hugh Jackman in Real Steel.

His collaborative relationship with Ryan Reynolds began in 2021. He directed him in Free Guy and The Adam Project the following year. That journey has culminated in Levy, Reynolds, and Jackman working on Deadpool 3 together.

Through his 21 Laps Entertainment production banner, Levy has produced several high-profile projects. This includes Stranger Things, which he is one of the primary producers of. He has also directed several episodes of the Netflix series.

MCU Avengers movies

From the start of the MCU, the Avengers was always their endgame (pun intended). They began setting up the team in the inaugural film (Iron Man) and released The Avengers in 2012. Age of Ultron would follow in 2015 before Infinity War and Endgame.

The team consisted of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Ruffalo and Hemsworth seem to be the only OG Avengers bound for a return in the fifth film.
