While the Chicago Bears were already out of postseason contention following the conclusion of Week 17, they surely hoped to end their season by spoiling the playoff hopes of the Green Bay Packers, a team they haven't bested since 2018. However, Green Bay prevailed, booking a postseason ticket in front of a tightly packed Lambeau Field. Despite the outcome, the one player for the Bears finished his season with a new NFL record: Montez Sweat.
Sweat just became the first player in NFL history to lead two different teams in sacks during the same season, as per ESPN's Field Yates. He posted 6.5 sacks for the Washington Commanders and 6.0 for the Bears.
Sweat continues defensive impact amid midseason trade to Bears
The 27-year-old was traded from the Commanders to the Bears last October in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick. In his eight games with the Commanders this season, Sweat tallied 32 tackles (21 solo and 11 assisted) to go with two forced fumbles. In his final nine games of the season donning the Chicago jersey, Sweat managed 25 combined tackles (17 solo and eight assisted) plus one forced fumble.
Following the midseason trade, the Bears gave the six-foot-six, 262-pound defensive end a four-year contract extension worth $98 million — and so far, the numbers have proven that Montez Sweat is living up to the money and expectations. Recently, Sweat was just voted to his first-ever Pro Bowl selection, giving Bears and Commanders fans something to smile about amid losing seasons for both franchises.
For the Bears fandom in particular, the continuous rise of the defensive behemoth is something to look forward to next season.
