When is a good time to quit acting? When it starts “to feel like just a job,” according to Dylan Minnette.

The actor has halted his acting career while pursuing music with his band, Wallows. This is mostly due to him feeling the strain of working in the entertainment industry as, well, a job.

Dylan Minnette opens up on why he quit acting

THR reported that he got honest about it all during a recent interview on the Zach Sang Show.

“I was fortunate to find success in [acting],” Minnette said. “I was on 13 Reasons Why and it was really popular and definitely reached a peak in what I've had in acting. But it also started to feel like a bit of a job. And I was in a very fortunate position, it was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like a job.”

“It's insane, but it's working out that way, and I'm just following what feels inspiring,” he continued.

Though he's ditched acting, he's now focusing on music. And it seems he's trying to make his band as big as possible.

“I feel like I'm in a position now where I can just kind of like do that for a while and get this the farthest it can be,” he added about Wallows. “The only way that's gonna happen is if I put my 100 percent time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously. This is a real band; we're going to do real band things.”

It's music that “feels natural and inspiring” to him now. But don't rule him out of never returning to the screen.

“I do feel like I have something to give, and that's probably acting…I feel like I'm starting to feel inspiration for that again,” he continued. “At some point, when we've fulfilled our Wallows duties and we're all ready to take a break as a band, that's when I'll have the perfect inspiration to do something.”

In fact, Minnette almost returned to acting. However, the strikes got in the way. “It just didn't work, so I really did — I was thinking about it.”

In 13 Reasons Why, Minnette starred as Clay Jansen on the hit Netflix series. It premiered in 2017 and continued for four seasons until 2020.

A couple of years later, he continued to get roles, appearing in Hulu's The Dropout and the fifth Scream. Before 13 Reasons Why, he had parts in Drake & Josh, Two and a Half Men, Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and Prison Break.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. Will Wallows become the next Rolling Stones, and Dylan Minnette will ditch acting for good? Or will he return to playing parts in hit shows? Maybe it'll be something entirely different. Time will tell…
