The New York Giants are set to hire Mike Shula as their new offensive coordinator, Kimberly Jones of NFL Media reports.
Apart from his role as OC, Shula is also set to be the team’s quarterbacks coach, according to Ian Rapoport. However, new Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is expected to be the offensive play-caller for the Giants next season instead of Shula.
Shula had spent the last seven seasons with the Carolina Panthers, five of which as their offensive coordinator. However, he was fired along with quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey after their playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints. Current Giants general manager Dave Gettleman will be well-acquainted with Shula’s work. Gettleman was the GM of the Panthers in four of Shula’s five years in Carolina.
The Giants had previously been interested in Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski to take over as offensive coordinator, but the Vikings blocked the Giants’ request to interview him. Former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell had also been linked with the job in recent days.
Shula was known for establishing some effective power running games during his time in Carolina. However, he struggled to improve upon the Panthers’ passing game, which was too inconsistent for most of his tenure.
In New York, Shula will look to upgrade the Giants’ ground game which has been among the least effective in the league for the past few years. The Giants finished 26th in rushing yards last season, while their six rushing touchdowns was tied for 28th.
