Jon Gruden's favorite hometown receiver has left the Bay Area for Florida. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Jacksonville Jaguars are signing undrafted receiver and HBO “Hard Knocks” star Keelan Doss to their practice squad after he went unclaimed on waivers. Per Garafolo, he had an offer by the Raiders but chose Jacksonville.
No longer will Gruden be able to say “man, I like this Doss kid” and “I want to see more of Keelan Doss.” Unless, of course, he plucks Doss back up from the Jaguars practice squad.
An undrafted production out of UC Davis, the big-bodied (6-foot-3, 215-pounds) Doss quickly became a favorite to watch in preseason play. He caught 17 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in four games; in Hard Knocks, his highlight-reel catches earned him a fan favorite label.
After his release, Doss spoke to ABC10 Sacramento during halftime of UC Davis' 27-13 loss to Cal. He said, per The Mercury News' Jerry McDonald:
“I can’t control any of it all. All I can do is go out there and perform and play football and let the rest take care of itself. If a team out there wants me, work it out there. If I end up on the Raiders again on the practice squad, we’ll make it work there too.”
Though Doss didn't leave out the possibility of playing for the Raiders, Jacksonville must've looked like a more promising option.
But, as is the nature of the practice squad, he can be signed by any team in 2019 if he impresses off of the 53-man roster.
