Former Carolina Panthers quarterback and 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton remains unsigned after the Panthers released him in March.

Though Newton might prefer to start for a contender in 2020, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has another team in mind for Cam: the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During an interview with TMZ Sports, Moon said he thought the Jags posed a good fit for Newton because he could come in and start in Week 1.

But while Moon might believe Newton could win the starting job over Gardner Minshew, signing Newton would hardly make any sense for the Jags.

Jacksonville clearly signaled their intent to rebuild in 2020. They traded away Calais Campbell, A.J. Bouye and Nick Foles, and are likely to trade Yannick Ngakoue at some point this offseason.

The Jaguars would probably prefer to see what they have in Minshew during this transition period, rather than sign a soon-to-be 31-year-old quarterback coming off a foot injury.

Yes, Newton can play at a high level when he is healthy. Plus, he is extremely motivated to prove he can still be a productive starting quarterback in the NFL. But he is not the right guy for a rebuilding team, especially considering what Minshew did last season.

Minshew went 6-6 in 12 starts, throwing for 3,271 yards and 21 touchdowns against just six interceptions. The completion percentage was low (60.6), and he also showed a tendency to hold the ball too long in the pocket.

Still, it seems the Jags wanted to clear the way for Minshew to start when the traded Foles, another reason signing Newton does not make much sense.

Moon also mentioned the Los Angeles Chargers as a potential destination for Newton, a team that would seem to make more sense given their quarterback situation and level of talent.
