The Jacksonville Jaguars' rough season is only getting worse. The club put quarterback Trevor Lawrence on injured reserve with a concussion, but it turns out that he has another ailment that needs attention.
Lawrence is having shoulder surgery, via NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.
“Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence is expected to have surgery to repair his significant AC joint injury in his left shoulder in the coming weeks, sources say. His season is over,” Rapaport said. “Lawrence will make a full recovery for 2025.”
Lawrence took a violent hit from Houston Texans linebacker Azeri Al-Shaair during the first quarter of Sunday's game. The Clemson alum slid feet-first on a scramble, and Al-Shaair speared him when he was already on the ground. Al-Shaair got disqualified from the game and has since been suspended for three weeks.
Lawrence thanked the football community for its well-wishes, via his social media.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out / been praying for me,” the 25-year-old said. “I’m home and feeling better. Means a lot, thank you all🙌🏼 ”
What's next for Jacksonville in these trying times?
Mac Jones will start in Trevor Lawrence's place for Jaguars
At 2-10, the Jaguars' playoff hopes are long gone. However, these next few weeks are important for evaluating their future.
Jacksonville backup and former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has the chance to establish himself as a viable starter. The Alabama alum was effective in relief of Lawrence on Sunday, completing 20 of 32 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns along with six rushing yards on three carries.
Jones played three years in New England after the team drafted him 15th overall in 2021. However, the Patriots moved on after he struggled in '23, tossing 10 touchdowns and 12 picks in 11 games.
If Jones keeps playing like he did on Sunday, though, Jacksonville will most likely pick up his fifth-year option and he'll put pressure on Lawrence moving forward.
