Don't look away now because Justin Herbert rookie cards are one of the hottest commodities in the hobby right now. Even in a market stacked with the likes of Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes II, the Los Angeles Chargers' quarterback is taking both the NFL and football card industry by storm.

After an impressive rookie year, Herbert is once again making a leap towards MVP territory. We take a look below at how his sophomore season is going and its effect on his stock in the card market.

Why Justin Herbert Rookie Cards Are Trending Up

In a market dominated by the likes of Brady and Mahomes, it's surprising to see someone as young as Herbert rise up in just his second year in the NFL. For some, this isn't something new with him leading the Chargers to the top of the American Football Conference with a 4-2 record. After all, Herbert did win both the Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year awards during his first year in the league.

But Herbert's leap is more than just the wins. He's also backing it up with the numbers required to justify his inclusion into the MVP conversation. This season alone, Herbert has exceeded 1,576 yards and 14 touchdowns. This puts the sophomore in fourth place in the league when it comes to passing touchdowns and passing yards. Moreover, ESPN said that Herbert's QB rating of 66.1 is up by more than 30 in the fourth quarter and overtime during his rookie season.

Thanks to a combination of impressive stats and convincing wins, the case for Herbert winning the MVP this season is gaining ground among fans and card collectors. Of course, this doesn't mean the Chargers' QB is locked in to win the prestigious award. There is still some serious competition down the road with the likes of Kyler Murray, Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson playing well out on the field this year.

While these guys present a legitimate case for the award, there's a lot to like about Herbert's chances. For one, he's still young and has a long career in front of him. Even if he doesn't win MVP this season, there's a pretty strong chance the Chargers' star can achieve this feat sometime in the coming years. But even if he doesn't get to do that before the season ends, Herbert's card value still wins after weeks of trending up in the market.

The Current State of Justin Herbert Rookie Cards

Thanks to an impressive sophomore campaign so far, Herbert's rookie stock in the card market is soaring through the sky. Take the PSA 10 value of his 2020 Prizm base rookie card, for instance.

As September of this year was drawing to an end, gem-mint slabs of Hebert's definitive rookie card were selling for $454 on eBay. Now, it's reached $650 in less than a month. The Silver variant, which is more desirable in a PSA 10 slab, has also gone bonkers. Just a few weeks ago, one can be had for $4,750. It has gone up to $8,000, making its price jump all the more jaw-dropping.

A lot can still happen between now and early next year when the season ends. One thing is for sure, though. With how his value has played out in the recent weeks, these Justin Herbert rookie cards are a proven winner to those who want to beef up their collection.
