This is the summer of giving back to the community. LeBron James made the biggest headlines with the opening of his I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. But he's not the only NBA star doing big things for those less fortunate.

Derrick Rose is setting up a scholarship program that will “provide students a path to college that was not previously available to them.” Rose is awarding over $400,000 in tuition money through the scholarship program.

James took to Twitter to salute Rose's charitable contributions with the hashtag “More Than An Athlete.”

The charitable contributions made by James, Rose and others seem to be fueling a desire for more players to get involved. Recently, Jeff Teague reached out to his fellow Indianans to discuss the possibility of banding together to open a school similar to the I Promise School.

Additionally, Browns cornerback T.J. Carrie discussed his desire to build upon what James is doing in Ohio. The positive energy coming from LeBron, Rose and others is palpable.

When athletes are routinely told to stick to sports or to “shut up and dribble,” it's heartwarming to see them do the exact opposite. By using their platform, guys like James and Rose are making the world a better place for those less fortunate.

Hopefully, this isn't the last story we hear about a player contributing to an educated-related cause this offseason. James and Rose are setting the example. It would be excellent to see more follow their lead.
