Jared Goff had a solid, mistake-free performance in the Detroit Lions' 21-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday night. It was the kind of game that Jared Goff has played consistently since the middle of the 2022 NFL season, putting him in historic territory. The Lions' quarterback is one or two games away from surpassing Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers for the most consecutive pass attempts without throwing an interception.

After going 22-of-35 for 253 yards, one touchdown and no picks in the Lions' season-opening win against the Chiefs, Goff has avoided an interception for 359 straight passes. The NFL record is Rodgers' streak of 402 pass attempts without an interception. Brady once had an interception-less streak of 399 pass attempts.

One year ago, Goff did not seem like a candidate to challenge Rodgers or Brady for any kind of NFL record. The Los Angeles Rams won a Super Bowl in their first season after trading Goff to the Lions. Goff had a 3-10-1 record for Detroit in 2021.

Goff and the Lions hit a turning point last November. Goff threw six interceptions as Detroit lost six of its first seven games. The quarterback had two touchdown passes and an interception in a 15-9 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 6. It was the last time Goff threw an interception. The Lions finished the season 8-2 and nearly snuck into the playoffs.

The preseason betting odds suggest that the Lions should return to the playoffs this season. If Goff can continue to avoid interceptions, there might be no ceiling on Detroit's expectations in 2023.
