Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, a Super Bowl champion and two-time MVP, has some thoughts on the future of Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Stafford, turning 32 years old next week, hurt his back in a bad way during the 2019 NFL season, forcing him to sit out the second half of the season and watch the Lions plummet to a 3-12-1 record—good for third-worst in the league.

Despite the scary injury afflicted on the wrong-side-of-30-year-old gunslinger, Warner still believes the Lions have their best shot at being a competitive ball club with Stafford under center (via Danny Bennett in Lions Wire).

“[As] long as Matthew (Stafford) is healthy, and they believe he can be healthy moving forward, he’s got plenty of time left to play and he’s extremely talented. For me, if I was Detroit, I’m saying, ‘Can we build a team around Stafford and then see what we have?’ I mean, he’s done so many great things in this league, but I don’t feel like he’s ever had a complete team around him, where he could truly compete so we could see really how good is he?”

The Lions possess the third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft in April, and they could easily select a top quarterback after the Cincinnati Bengals take LSU Tigers Heisman Trophy-winning signal-caller Joe Burrow at No. 1. The choices could come down to another injured quarterback in Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa, who's recovering from hip surgery, and Oregon's Justin Herbert. Another option would be just taking a different position or trading down for a QB-needy team to jump up, which would be two options Warner is good with given his admiration for Stafford.
